Good evening all.
I would firstly like to take the opportunity of reading an apology from Mr. Schroder who could not be here tonight.
Please accept and minute my apologies for not attending the Annual General Meeting of the PBHS OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION.
I would be grateful if you could convey my thanks to all with whom I have been associated on the Directorate for the past 25 years and whose loyalty, support and friendship has enable us, together, to take the Association to the level at which it is now. It has been a wonderful journey and my interest in, support of and passion for the OBA will always continue unabated.
Best wishes for the years ahead.
Mr. Schroder vacated his position on the directorate earlier this year and I would like to thank him on behalf of all Old Boys for his commitment and loyalty to our Association. His love for the school and the old boys is something we will always remember him for. I would also like to thank Mrs. Schroder who handled the database for many of these years, a thankless job which was appreciated by all.
At the same time I would like to on behalf of the Association thank Mr. Schroder who has headed up the fundraiser, which has raised just over R27 500 000.00. This is thanks to his tireless work and the generosity of many Old Boys. This is also a record for any state owned school in the history of our country. At the annual Old Boys dinner in two weeks a new vision for the project will be officially launched and shared with all present.
2014 thankfully saw the Association eventually make the employment of Inge Paulsen and Yvonne Uys.
Inge has taken over the administration of the Association while Mrs. Uys the administration of the club. Both are based here at the club and both have adapted well into their new environment and I am sure you will all agree a noticeable change in the communication from the Association and trust that you will enjoy these more regular newsletters.
The database is fully functional with just on 9900 currently on it. Our biggest challenge is that we are currently only able to communicate with 4000 odd electronically. We therefore via social media are trying to get as many Old Boys to update their details. This has proven to be successful with about 15 updates via the website being done daily. As previously mentioned a further hurdle we face is that historically only boys who joined the Association were captured to the database and hence a further drive to capture all past pupils and ensure the recruitment of them.
As most of you know we have also streamlined our activities calendar. The focus has been on two main events, the Summer Sports Day and the OLD BOYS WEEKEND which is to be held on the 6th and 7th of June. The dinner this year will move venue and the Abernethy Hall will be used for what I am told the first time and the last time in its current format. I am also pleased to inform you that Minister Pravin Gordhan has accepted the invitation to be our honoured guest speaker. I have no doubt that the weekend will be a resounding success and look forward to seeing you all there.
I would like to take the opportunity to have my say regarding the recent sport results and the outcry from Old Boys, especially via social media. While I agree that the results are concerning I do however think as a community we should be careful in critizing especially when it is directed at specific individuals. Let us be different. Let us help, support and encourage instead. Yes we may be ashamed of our results but surely not of our school. Let us also not forget that the loser in any irriational comment are the boys themselves and that surely does no good to them at all. I am comforted by the fact that the Headmaster and myself have discussed this in length and that the issues are being dealt with and do believe it is only fair to give him the necessary time to make the correct decisions for the good of the school and the boys, importantly without haste. Mr. Reeler I would further like you to know that you have our full and unconditional support as headmaster to our school.
A massive thanks to the directorate who have continued to play a critical role as Old Boys, a special thanks to Mr. Lourens, vice chair. Matt Blackmore, treasurer, and Kyle Schmulow, secretary. I would also like to personally thank Jason Webber who has taken over the finances of the club, I know the work you have done and continue to do is making a remarkable difference.
In closing I do believe the biggest challenge facing this Association over the next 12 months is this property and the relevance of a social and sporting club and the way in which it is currently managed. This is a very real issue which needs to be dealt with sensibly and sensitively and in saying that and as I did last year I appeal to you all present that will make yourself available as Directors for the ensuing year that when we get to the election process to appreciate that there is a huge amount of work to be done, that you will need to commit to making meetings, making yourself available for the full duration of meetings and that passengers can add no value to the success of our Association into the future.
