Another one of our fine school colleagues has passed away.
Bruce Currer had for many years suffered with problems with his kidneys – Amyloidosis – and last week the doctors said the kidneys had finally shut down. The doctors had proposed that he go for 6 hours of dialysis every day in hospital, but Bruce has said he would prefer that they find an alternative, allowing him to say his farewells to those who will stay behind, and then shuffle off as quietly as possible.
Bruce still had his sense of humour, and kept abreast of world developments, it’s just that his body was letting him down.
Sadly Bruce passed away yesterday and is survived by his wife Hilary who sent the following message:
“Surrounded by Lex, Em, Casey, Nat and me, Bruce passed away peacefully last night.
Bruce has run his final ultramarathon with courage, dignity and grace.
We are devastated, but his strength, love and amazing sense of adventure will be with us always.”
I was with Bruce at Brooklyn School where I remember him as a relatively short person with a fine mind, excellent soccer skills and a good friend. At PBHS he excelled in most activities he tackled but as he grew into one of the tallest in Form V he became a core member of the First XV rugby team.
I understand Bruce had a very successful professional career in the USA and Canada but our paths only crossed at a few school reunions and once in England at the Rugby World Cup in 1999.
We will miss one of our class of ’64 – Bruce was a genuine friend, kind and considerate of others, with integrity and what I remember was a good sense of humour
