It is with sadness that I have to report the passing of Carl. His father, also Carl, was an architect and in matric in 1943.
Carl Junior was in Arcadia House and was admitted to PBHS in 1964. From the start he was in the swimming team. In 1966 he was first in the 66 2/3 yards butterfly (under 15) and first in the 100 yards free style. He was awarded 2nd team colours and was part of the gymnastic team.
In 1967 he broke Tiny Barnetson’s 66 2/3 yards butterfly record with a time of 37.5 seconds. In the under 16, 100 yards free style, he also broke the record with a time of 53.8 seconds. He was awarded 1st team colours. In 1968 Carl was made a School Prefect and was made House Captain for Arcadia. He captained the swimming team and was re-awarded 1st team colours for both the 100 yards butterfly and 100 yards free style.
I believe he also swam for South Africa, getting Springbok colours. Carl died on the 6 September 2010
