The Deciding Factor
Friday rang down the curtain on this season’s cricket. The final matches between the “daydogs” and the borders were played in an “if-you-bowl-me-out-I’ll-not-give-you-a-sandwich-on-Monday” spirit. As can be expected, the day houses
won the laurels.

RIGHT: Two Tons – Saturday 23 February 1985 was a memorable occasion for First XI Cricket at Pretoria Boys’ High School. The photograph shows Stuart Spencer and Glen Corbett opening the School innings against St John’s College,
both second centuries. Their partnership was worth 174 runs scored in 100 minutes. ‘This is the only record I can find of two hundreds being scored in the same innings at Pretoria Boys’ High School’ – Charles Mulvenna (Source: The Pretorian

A Good Catch?
The senior House matches this year were played in a rather unusual fashion. This was a result of the polio epidemic: we were only allowed to play in the cool of the day for a limited period. Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed myself although we played on the average system.
I remember a rather amusing incident that occurred in a game I was watching between Town and Arcadia, a rather important fixture.
During the course of the day an Arcadia batsmen of fair calibre was facing a fast Town bowler. He was doing quite well for himself until he made one unfortunate slip.
He edged a ball to the slips and as it hurtled through the air something that brought tears of mirth happened. The slip fielder was suddenly awakened from his sweet repose by a ball hurtling in his direction. He did what
practically all slip fielders do: he hurled his right arm into the air in a futile effort to catch the ball. To his utter amazement the ball become firmly lodged in his left hand dangling loosely at his side.
It was quite a terrific joke to his team mates but also quite a relief.
