A LOOK BACK…

CRICKET

An Aspect of Master’s League Cricket
It has started again. That hilarious comedy which one can hardly call cricket, especially when Mr. Grobler fields in his suit and dives after balls with no thought for his trousers, or after opening his innings fairly successfully, Dr. Schiff promptly receives a lesson from one of the boys, and then calmly hits a ball straight up into the air with one of his newly acquired strokes!

Near Storm in a Tea Cup
When I first took an interest in cricket, I decided to play as often as possible at school. So it was that I put my name down for Mr Brooks’ nets on Fridays.
All the boys had told me they were quite nice and that Mr. Brooks helped them a great deal to get their strokes right. On my first attempt I made quite a “hash-up”. My bowling was not too good and although my batting was fair, I was struck not less than five times on my knee.
On the second Friday I was more confident and after I had bowled, I strode onto the wicket to have a go at batting.

Alas, my confidence was short lived when the bowlers began to spin the ball and a second later heard a horrible smash. The ball had evidently hit the top corner of my bat, shot over the top of the net, and crashed into Mr. Brooks’ tray of tea. To make matters worse, Mr Brooks was sitting next to the tray and he was covered in sugar, tea and milk.
However the vice-head saw the humour of the situation, and after I had picked the pieces up, the incident was not mentioned again.

Triumph and Tragedy

During our third match of the season, on C field, I felt very nervous. I went in, fourth wicket down, and as no one in our team had made a duck I was thinking how I would make my apologies to our master and captain and worst of all, to the team.
With these thoughts I found centre, and prepared to face the first ball. It was, I thoughts, on the off and a straight ball. I took a mighty swipe, but missed it and was hit in the box. The next ball I tried to hit straight. I took a mighty swipe, but the ball hit me on the thigh. Over up.
My partner ran a single and I was once again facing. This time I watched the ball closely and as it bounced, I connected. It went for a six. (I feel that it is my duty again to remind you that it was C field.) It was the first six that I had ever hit.
I was full of confidence and now went on to hit a single, then a four and another four and a single. Over up.
The next over was bowled by a good spinner and he made the mistake of bowling one on the leg. I swiped out and it went for a four. I had retired! The first time at Boys’ High!
I walked out, my chest out, head up, and wearing a big smile. I put my bat under my arm, pulled my gloves off and received the applause of my team mates.
The next match we played I went in sixth wicket down. I thought I could score another twenty. Even fifteen would have been alright. I went in, found centre and got down to face. I hit a single off the last ball of the over. The next over was from a spinner. His first ball I played forward too, but it bounced to leg. The next ball, I thought would also spin, so I just put my bat in the way. The ball shot straight up and I was caught on the mat. Back I walked, my head bowed and received the clapping which I think was for the bowler.

The Cruel Race
I had run two hundred yards when I started tiring. I Thought I would collapse, but I persuaded myself to run another hundred yards. I then sat down for a minute and had a quiet rest.
Inspiration and encouragement reached my brain when I saw a blonde girl about a mile away. When I reached her I found she looked like a dragon.
I came to the tennis courts, half a mile to go. Nearly there…
Suddenly to my amazement I saw two boys in front of me, walking. Then I told myself, I couldn’t come last, but third last! I accelerated and flew past the two boys. Result: I hit the ground!

TENNIS

Machines Without Oil
During the fourth term a tennis match took place between the Masters and the boys. I was surprised to see how unfit the Masters were. They were like machines without oil. At first my partner and I won our games quite easily, but then we came up against the experience of former years and I am not ashamed to say that we were beaten. However, it is no disgrace to be beaten by players of the calibre of Mr. Abernethy and Mr Hofmeyr.
