A LOOK BACK…
CRICKET
INSECTS
The day K.E.S. came over the Headmaster told us that we must have no cockroaches; what he meant by this was boys creeping away in the shadows. He took the precaution of locking the sheds though; but he forgot that cockroaches are small, so they climbed through the wire, got on their bicycles and returned the same way. I think the Headmaster should have laid some cockroach powder around in the shadows.

UNNECESSARY LABOUR
On Monday most of the school gathered to make themselves unnecessarily tired by running three and a half miles. This is commonly known as the cross country.

MODERN ART
At first glance, a piece of modern art seems to be only a series of conflicting greens and reds. Should you, however, stand and study such a painting you will slowly understand the inner feeling the artist had when he created his work. Then only do you appreciate it, for in modern art is not only the visible represented but also the invisible.
In a painting of, say, a woman you may see it as abstract but the artist has painted her thoughts into the picture.
We, at Pretoria Boys High School, are fortunate in having a well-liked and well-known artist, Mr Walter Battis, with us. In his own words he says:
“My aim is to make a synthesis in my art between the visible and the suggestions of eternity hidden in man. I am sure that in time all humanity will come, at least to understand if not to love, modern art.”

TABLE TENNIS
A BANNED SPORT
It is a common sight to see, behind the swimming baths at break, a strenuous cone fight in progress. It is an unwritten law not to throw young green cones, but, usually when nobody is looking, some sly fellows indulge in the unlawful fun of trying to break an opponent’s skull with some of the fallen green cones. This game is exciting in the extreme, for one never knows when one is going to be hit. Even the spectators have the thrill of this uncertainty. Usually the sides are of equal strength; but occasionally one side is too strong for their opponents, and the unfortunate weaker side has to take to its heels. (This is a bit of history. The sport described above has not been banned.)

CHESS
The Chess Club is a very informal affair. There are no statutes, no fees, no secretary or chairman, no fixed membership. Last year there was a nucleus of about 15 regulars with a fluctuating sprinkling of casuals.
There is a lot of enthusiasm, although the talent is mixed. A Brick (Form III F) is our best player and last year came in second in the School Tournament, arranged by the Netherlands Max Euwe Club. At the other end of the ladder are beginners who do not mind if they lose every game as long as they can play and get more practice. Between these extremes we have every shade of talent and experience.
In our matches against other schools we again lost against Hoër Seuns; an excursion to Bronkhorstspruit ended also in defeat, but the results were much more encouraging than before – it was not a complete walk-over this time.
The atmosphere is not always ruled by complete silence as an adult chess club would keep; occasionally there is quite a lot of chatter and hilarity, but we see to it that the game does not suffer.
1960 has started well. The turn-out is much increased – the new Form I’s show remarkable interest, swelling our numbers to well over 30 regulars.
