CROSS COUNTRY

Before…

Weeks before the cross-country deadline a straggling line of boarders begins to trickle along the otherwise peaceful roads and pathways of the School. All types are present. Impressive people with long spidery legs and a mile-guzzling gait glide along ahead of the riff-raff – the poor panting little juniors spewing salt water from every seam and appearing as if each painful step is the very last. Many day-boys seem to lack the frantic keenness of the boarders. Mere days before the race a very few are troubled by a completely-dormant conscience and endeavour to run the course. The big red-faced dayboys waddling hopelessly down the road look miserably incompetent and very funny beside the slithering and tireless pace of the boarders.

At last comes the race itself. I find myself amidst hordes of horribly athletic-looking youths in streamlined shorts and vests. The masters are there in strength, together with disdainful and smug-looking boys, who decided they could do without running, carting around snacks of oranges. If you press the matter any further, however there is always an excuse ready.
After interminable standing around and vain efforts in trying not to stand twenty feet behind the others, we are finally lined up. The gate of the School, behind a shimmering expanse of cricket-field, looks very, very far away. Beyond that I care not to think …

A novel event this year was the Table Tennis Tournament. The winners were seen at the final which was played off in the School hall. Bourquin emerged the singles champion, while Blem and his partner became the School’s first doubles champions. On the whole, the tournament was a success, and the people responsible for its arrangements are to be congratulated on their good work. S. Sampson – The Pretorian 1950.

FENCING CLUB 1980

At the beginning of this year a fencing club was started at the School. The response was good and resulted in a club of about 30 members. The boys took part in several individual competitions as well as an inter-school’s competition. Six schools participated in the latter and the final results were: 3rd Pretoria Boys’ High, 2nd Die Wilgers, 1st Sandown High. Two of our fencers attended a fencing course held at the University of Pretoria during the July holidays.

Fencing is a fascinating sport in which both mental and physical abilities are combined in a way which is unique in the sporting world. Because of the tactics and the guile involved in fencing it has often been called ‘physical chess’. It has a rich history dating back as far as ancient Egypt and it has deep roots in the history of chivalry. In very few other sports is so much emphasis placed on sportsmanship and etiquette. In modern fencing, bouts are fought with one of three weapons: the foil which is a stabbing weapon, the sabre which is a cutting weapon and the epée which is a stabbing weapon used in a Pentathlon. At PBHS boys can do both foil and sabre.

The Pretoria Boys High Fencing club has had a successful first year under the guidance of the master-in-charge, Mr Lamont. Interested boys are welcome to come and see what this is all about. We are looking forward to a great year in 1991.

DEBATING

Debating Society 1980

Although there has always been great talent for debating in the school, it has never been fully realised and, with this in mind, the debating society was restarted this year.

Probably the most notable occasion in our debating calendar was a rather heated debate with the Girls’ High School. Apart from an exhibition on how to kick a chair across the floor (by an Australian exchange scholar at Girls High) much valuable experience was gleaned from this.

Earlier this year a Public Speaking Festival was held under the auspices of the society, with Boys High excelling in all the forms. One of our members, D. Galgut of Form IV, went on to come second in the individual section in the Transvaal.

Thanks to Mrs Erasmus for all her support and continued interest throughout the year, and to Mr Rademeyer, who was in charge of the Junior Debating Society.
