Dear Old Boy
The Class of 2004 enjoyed a fantastic 10 Year-on Reunion weekend in November this year. Herewith a report from ’04 Head Boy – Rob Ferguson:
Class of 2004 Reunion 2014
It was with great excitement and anticipation that the class of 2004 met early in the morning of Friday 21 November for a quick round of golf and a good old fashioned catch-up with mates, who most us have not seen since leaving school ten years ago. While the majority of guys would only attend the dinner on the Saturday night, it was very good to see so many familiar faces at the Waterkloof Country Club.
Saturday morning was marked by our year’s first of a kind “Let’s Give Back” outreach initiative. This saw roughly 30 Old Boys helping with repairs and installations of various items such as planting trees, fixing toilets and jungle gyms and clearing out garbage, not to mention the planting of a veggie garden together with fresh manure and fertilizer supplies.
The Thando Westford Community Crèche is situated in Pretoria West and was previously a Leper Colony which, as you can imagine, has fallen into disrepair over the years. It is clear that what we take for granted everyday such as electricity, running water and basic plumbing are at the top of priority needs for this small crèche. I hope we helped in some small way to make their lives a little easier. I also hope and believe that this initiative is not just a once off and that other reunion years get involved where they can. I will be in touch with Dave Clark for next year’s ten year and will encourage him to get involved, as I truly believe if we are to grow as a country, we will need the help of everyone especially those little toddlers. If anyone is interested in getting involved please do not hesitate to get in touch.
After serving boerie rolls to the masses at the community crèche it was time for the dinner. We arrived at the central dining hall and it was set up in all its glorious colours of red, white and green. It is safe to say that Steffani and her team of helpers had excelled with the décor, food and liquid refreshments set up. We wanted for nothing.
Highlights of the evening would most definitely be the hilariously funny antics of our master of ceremonies, Robbie Kruse, who kept us entertained between speakers and courses. Mr Illsley spoke from the heart and gave us a candid report on the school and what has been achieved over the past year, not mention some of the plans going forward. The school is in good hands. Bill “the Boss” Schroder was the final speaker and entertained as only he can with anecdotes from our group with a reminder to all of us to help out where we can with the current fundraising drive.
A good deal of fun was had by all and the reunion was a great success for all of these involved. Thank you to all who played a part in its success; we are all looking forward to the next one in ten years’ time.

SUMMER SPORTS’ DAY 2015
The ever popular Summer Sports’ Day will take place on 17 January 2015. The following sports will be on offer: Basketball, Cricket, Cross-Country, Squash, Tennis & Water Polo.
The 1st Cricket XI will play their game on Sunday 11 January at the PHSOB Club. Come and show your support!

PRETORIA BOYS HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
On Thursday 20 November 2014, Pretoria Boys High School bid farewell to Daniel Harvey and his wife Sharon, who will be relocating to Australia in the New Year. They also wished Annchen Matthews, Heidi Stuart and Annette Floor an enjoyable retirement.
DESMOND ABERNETHY HALL UPDATE
Building Report – Week Ending 28 November 2014
All brickwork between the concrete columns in the front section of the hall has now been removed and the intricate process of lifting the roof support structure (lattice girder beams) into position above the area where the two new wings will be constructed, has now been completed. Construction of the side walls of the new wing in the memorial quad has begun.
OLD BOY NEWS
Justin Reid-Ross (2004) has been playing in the Dutch Premier Hockey League (Hoofdklasse) for the last five years and this league is widely regarded as the best league in the world.
It attracts all of the best players in the world and week after week one will play with and against international players from countries such as England, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Germany, Argentina etc., plus a host of current, past and junior Dutch international players. At the beginning of this season he changed clubs and now plays for Amsterdam Club, one of the best clubs in The Netherlands.
Earlier this year Justin became the highest scoring foreign born player in the history of the Hoofdklasse, an amazing achievement when one considers how many foreign stars have played in this league over the years. He has scored a total of 93 goals in four and a half seasons.He is also currently the top scorer in the league for this season, and has scored 22 goals in 13 games, two ahead of his closest rival.

Apart from playing professional hockey, he is also employed at an asset management company in Amsterdam. He will be returning to SA on Friday 5 December for a few weeks, as he will be getting married on 13 December at Lourensford in the Cape.
DISMAY
Last Thursday as I reached the traffic light at Magnolia Dell on my way to school, I saw a boy ride out from under the railway bridge and start pushing his bicycle up the hill.
This was quite a normal sight, only on this day I saw the person had his cadet uniform on, something I had forgotten. Then I realized that there was cadets on a Thursday and although I knew I had a good chance of getting round ourOfficer, I saw trouble ahead as the master in command of our squadron was a strict person.
As I rode up to school I began thinking up various excuses but everyone seemed worse than the previous one and eventually I decided to say my
cadet uniform had been stolen from the washing line.
Then as I glanced at the notice board before strolling down to B-field,
a tiny scrap of paper in the far corner caught my eye. I opened it out and it read:
CADETS
Since it is the boarders’ free weekend, cadet uniforms are not to be worn tomorrow.
