IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Registration:
Registration will take place at the Sommerville Cricket Pavilion at the following times: 8:00 – 9:30 and 12:00 – 13:00
Official Team Photographs:
Old Boys are requested to please make themselves available for official team photographs at registration.
Building Project Update:
Old Boys are invited to view the School’s Building Project on Summer Sports Day before the events commence. Those interested must please meet Mr Illsley at 8:30 at the Headmaster’s study door for a brief tour.
School Museum:
The School Museum will be open for Old Boys who wish to visit from the following times: 8:00 – 10:00 and 14:00 – 16:00.
Cash Bar Hours at Sommerville Pavilion:
The cash bar will be open from the following times: 12:30 – 14:30 and 16:00 – 18:00. Old Boys are welcome to visit the PHSOB Club in Lynnwood thereafter.
Regalia:
Pretoria Boys High School Old Boys Association Regalia will be on sale for Life Members of the PBHSOB Association at the Sommerville Pavilion on the day. Cash and Credit Card facilities will be available. Life Membership of the PBHSOB Association will also be available to those interested in joining.

CROSS COUNTRY
The 4.5 km Cross Country race commences at 9am and starts at the bottom of Suicide. Any Old Boy may compete in their Club or University colours if applicable. For further information, please email Lincoln Keeton at LKeeton@boyshigh.com
LETTERS
In response to “Dismay” by D.J.Rees, form 5A 1965 – published in the December 2014 Email Newsletter:
By chance I read this little article by my classmate “DJ” Rees (in those times no relation to disc jockey) from 1965. One of Bob Fair’s “moments of awareness?” Unfortunately DJ didn’t turn up to our 40 Year On class reunion in 2005. I believe he went to Australia and became a successful businessman.
I remember cadets very well. Coming from a school in Germany in 1964 it was a very strange new experience. On Thursday mornings I perceived an extraordinary change in schoolmates and masters that behaved quite normally on other occasions. Suddenly they acted very awkwardly shouting at the top of their voices and stamping around kicking up dust.
I didn’t like it. This kind of exercise was not popular any more in post-war Germany. I remember Eddie Dorey inspecting the rows with his rope, giving a little whacking here and there – when you were naughty or just in case you might be thinking of being naughty. He described how the eyes of the girls would pop out on the day of the grand parade, when they would see us marching smartly up and down the field. I wasn’t so sure about that. I questioned him in 2005, why he was so popular in spite of his famous whacking. He said that he never hit in anger – and I suppose that is true.
I asked Headmaster Abernethy if I could get out of cadets, but he said it was an integral part of school life. I gave it another try in form 5 with Bob Fair. Carefully I had prepared all my arguments for a difficult discussion, but that great psychologist dismissed me after a few minutes: he could understand my feelings very well, and I could join a few other boys from Jehovah’s Witnesses and watch PT. So that was the end of it, and I could watch Johnny Cave doing his perfect 11/2 somersault from the 1m diving board.
When I refused military service back in Germany a few years later, one of my arguments was my cadet experience – and the council just waved me through. I wonder when cadets were eventually abandoned and why?
I greatly appreciate getting the Newsletter, also to be able to hear the speeches on the Annual Old Boys Dinner with Trevor Quirk speaking that kind of language I can understand without difficulty and Gordon Hay remembering Eddie Dorey. I have been in 8 different schools in different countries and Boys High was definitely the best. Eventually I have reached retirement as a GP in Upper Bavaria – but not quite. I still enjoy doing a little something tutoring young colleagues for GP – but no stress, no emergencies -reading (“no time like the present” – very difficult) and family life with my wife Britta, 4 children and 3 grandchildren.

In response to a historic Water Polo photo – published in the January 2015 Email Newsletter:
It was interesting to see the picture of Terry Collard at the swimming pool.
May I go back to the year 1937 when I came to Boys High in Form 3. It was the year after the Olympics in Germany. The redoubtable South African swimming coach, Jimmy Green, came to the school with the two Olympians Molly Ryde and Terry Collard to show us how to swim. Jimmy Green stayed on at the school to teach swimming and I joined the class. I became a reasonable club swimmer. His swimming style to this day has never left me.
I swam until I was 25 (1949) and started again in masters swimming in 1996 in Johannesburg. I immigrated to Perth, Australia in 2001 and I am still swimming at age 91. At my club’s annual luncheon in December 2014, I was awarded the Swimmer of the Year.
