The 2016 Summer Sports Day was held on Saturday 16 January at Pretoria Boys High School. It was well supported by Old Boys and a good time was had by all. The Old Boys gave valuable advice and tips to the youngsters, from which they are sure to learn.

Of the 96 full-time teachers on the staff this year, 16 are Old Boys and a further 28 either married an Old Boy or have had children at the school. If we extend this to the support staff and part-timers, a further 6 are Old
Boys.
Of these 16 teachers, 10 are below 30 years of age which is encouraging that there are so many young Old Boys wanting to teach at the school.

SCHOOL BUILDING UPDATE
Building Update; Week ending 22 January 2016
Floor and wall electrical conducting has been installed and the internal plastering has been completed throughout the building.
An undercoat of paint has been applied in some music rooms and revised internal walls and windows within the library have been completed. Air ducting installation is at an advanced stage on both floors, ceiling panel supports in the Music Centre are being installed.
Window frame and window sill detailing on the upper floor is being completed – aluminium window frames are being installed and face brick panels on the upper level is now complete.
Music centre main entrance (on the southern side) now cast and the staircase from the library to the music centre has now been installed.
SCHOOL RUGBY UPDATE
Good day gents,
Hope this finds you well.
My first year came and went like a rocket on fire and the 2015 rugby season was a massive challenge as you very well know. Mistakes were made, but also through that, lessons were learnt.
Good ideas on paper are not always feasible in practice or applicable in specific environments. With that in mind we have done a lot of thinking and planning for 2016 and the years to come.
There were improvements across the board in 2015 with regard to our age group teams in terms of points/tries scored, points conceded and the win/loss ratio. The 2016 season holds much promise given the talent pool and the addition of the 2016 form 1’s.
Planning for 2016 started last year already where we began to identify boys in July and monitored them throughout the last part of the season. Two weeks after the season ended a squad of 75 boys were assembled, tested and put on conditioning programmes as well as certain individual skill set programmes. Squad training (off-season) started at the end of August and 4 pillars were identified as to what we wanted to achieve in the off-season. This included conditioning (aerobic), unit skills, individual skills and defensive systems. I feel we achieved the above and are on track. The boys’ attitude and commitment must be applauded.
I took the 1st and 2nd team coaches away on a “Bosberaad” on a game farm in Limpopo at the end of October to do a bit of “beraad”, but also a bit of “bos” was necessary! It was 3 days of planning and over 30 different aspects/points were addressed and I think a lot of value was added. A squad of 45 were picked from the original squad and training commenced as per usual. Just before the holiday the boys were tested again and put on training and conditioning programmes for the holidays.
This year’s training has already commenced and the whole squad was tested again to get an idea of where we are with regards to conditioning. The first week and a half’s training will be a recap of the off-season’s 4 pillars (to get the holiday rust out), then we’ll move over to pre-season preparation (anaerobic conditioning, unit and team skills and defence). Trials start on the 12th of March, so time is of the essence. A lot of time will be spent on player empowerment and skill improvement to slot into the game we want to play. We’re also excited to be working with Sport Psychologists Theo Bezuidenhout, Stephen van Niekerk (Old Boy) and Shaun Landsberg (Old Boy) who will work and assist us with the boys and the coaches during the year.
Unfortunately we’ve lost a few of our coaches from 2015, but we’re excited with the new coaches who will be joining us. Dion de Kock (specialised scrumhalf coach) and Dandré van der Westhuizen (scrum) are joining us, as well as four Bulls Student coaches for this year. The Blue Bulls’ kicking coach also started working with all the kickers in 2015, and will continue to do so this year.
The Union is also giving us Advance Coaching Courses on a monthly basis which will be held at Boys High for all our coaches for the rest of the year. We’re also excited that Mr Housdon will be joining The Blue Bulls U16 coaching group and that JP Ferreira (Old Boy) will assist us on a technical basis during the course of the year.

CLASS OF 2005 – 10 YEAR ON REUNION
The class of 2005 celebrated there 10 year on over the weekend of the 20-21 November 2015. It was extremely hard to believe for most of the old boys of ’05 that it has already been 10 years since we left the glorious Pretoria Boys High School estate. Driving back onto the grounds on Friday was a surreal experience and I know many of the old boys had that “coming home” feeling. The weekend was jammed packed with activities and functions to keep the ’05 boys busy
Some of the highlights included:
THE FRIDAY GOLF DAY
The weekend kicked off with 40 of 2005’s most talented golfers teeing off early at Zwartkops Country Club. While the words “most talented” could be the biggest overstatement of the year the guys had a blast with some great golf played all round.
The theme was RED, WHITE and GREEN in honour of our Alma Mater and the players made a great effort in this regard which only added to the ‘gees’.
The golf was followed by drinks, snacks and a prize giving in the club house. After seeing some of the prizes up for grabs many of the old boys claimed they would have upped their game in order to be more competitive. Unfortunately the same guys who were making these lavish claims also happened to be the biggest hackers on the course.
First place went to Mike Dos Santos and Michael Kyriacou (71 off a 9 handicap) who both received Tom Tom GPS golf watches. Well played boys!
A special mention must go to Robert Ponton and Justin Thom for organising the golf day. It was brilliantly done and the perfect way to start off the weekend. Thank you very much for the effort guys.
FRIDAY DRINKS AND THE LAST POST AT THE SCHOOL
At 16:15 on Friday the ’05 Old Boys started to arrive at the front of school to enjoy a few drinks, catch up and most importantly re-live one of everyone’s fondest memories of our time at school, the Last Post. Mr Louis Legat from the Old Boys Club had kindly set up a small bar for us which was a welcome relief for some of the guys who had had a long week in the trenches. The excitement levels were high as school war stories, banter and laughter filled the air. At exactly 17:30 the Last Post rang out of the west bell tower over the school grounds. You could hear a pin drop while each old boy lost themselves in their thoughts for the duration of the song. At the end of the Last Post Eddy Ntaka broke out a classic Boys High war cry to which all joined in, in tribute to our school.
A special thank you must go to Dr van der Watt who ensured there would be a trumpeter to play even though it was the middle of exams and Mr Louis Legat from the Old Boys Club for setting up the bar. Thank you for an extremely special experience.
FRIDAY DRINKS AT THE OLD BOYS CLUB
After the Last Post the Old Boys of 2005 made their way to the Old Boys Club to continue catching up and really let loose. I am sure you can imagine how the rest of this evening went with a great bunch of guys and ‘gees’ levels at an all-time high.
Thank you to the bar staff at the Old Boys Club for their patience and great service. The scariest thing was that this was just a warm up in comparison to what was to come on Saturday night!
SATURDAY MORNING MOXI-WALLING
With heavy heads the 2005 Old Boys reassembled at the front of the school at 10:30 on Saturday morning. While we had lost a few guys to the previous night’s shenanigans we were lucky enough to gain some fresh faces who had arrived on Saturday morning.
As part of a project that would benefit the school we were set to Moxi-Wall one of the science labs. Moxi- Wall is an incredible product developed by two ’05 Old Boys which allows you to turn any smooth surface into a white board. The Moxi-Wall takes the colour of the surface it is painted onto and allows any user to use white board markers on the surface. Although we only got one surface done on the day the class of ’05 will be doing a second class by the end of the year.
A special thank you must go to Shane Branscombe and Justin Fisher for the generous donation of their product, time and expertise in getting this project done. Lastly a special thank must go to all the Old Boys who arrived to be part of the project and giving something back to the school.
SATURDAY NIGHT FORMAL DINNER
Finally the main event of the weekend had arrived. This event saw 140 Old Boys from ’05 as well as masters past and present descend on the central dining hall at 19:00 on Saturday night. It was a spectacular sight, seeing so many Old Boys and masters dressed in their best to attend a dinner which pays homage to the best school in the world.
It was an action packed schedule which saw nine different speakers take to the podium and what can only be described as a Mc’ing master class from Mandla Holomisa. Speeches can make or break these types of functions and I believe we were treated to a world class show by every speaker who took to the podium. The speakers were as follows:

For the ’05 year it was special to have both the head boy from when we were in form 1, Tom Rundle, as well as the headmaster during our time, Bill Schroder, in attendance. Both delivered rousing speeches which were hugely well received by the Old Boys. It was also a great privilege to have the current headmaster Mr Reeler attend and talk to us as the majority of the ’05 boys have never had any interaction with him. Great to get to know you Sir!
One of the biggest highlights of the evening was getting a chance to catch up with some of the masters who taught us. To our delight many of the masters are still teaching at the school educating future generations of Boys High boys. It was great to hear the truth behind some of the stories between old boys and the masters come to light 10 years later over a cold beer. I would to take this opportunity to thank Mr Illsley, Mr McBride, Mr O’Brien, Mr Obermeyer, Mr Sommerville, Dr van der Watt, Mr Van Wyk, Mr Phipps, Mr Housdon, Mr Van Suilichem and Mr Hassenkamp. A special mention must go to Mr Hassenkamp who travelled from Hermanus and Mr O’Brien who travelled from Rustenburg in order to attend the dinner. Thank you so much for the effort to attend our evening.
The evening culminated in the singing of 40 Years On which was an absolute hit and the ’05 Old Boys belted the words out like we were back in matric and leaving the school for the first time. A real crowd pleaser to say the least. This concluded the formal part of the evening but the guys were not done just yet. A special thank you to the Catering Manager, Steffani Kruger and her team of cooks and waiters. The food was delicious and the service great. The biggest thank you of all needs to go to Mr Rob Fourie and his bar staff who kept the 140 attendees well hydrated.
As the guys headed off to the after party at the Old Boys Club the general consensus is that the school has never looked in better condition and that it will continue to produce the same quality of boy which the school has produced for the last 115 years, for many years to come.
The after party at the Old Boys Club ended at 08:00 the next morning with a group of us still going strong. Lets just say Monday would have been a struggle for some!
What a weekend. What a school and what an absolute privilege to be back! Thank you Pretoria Boys High School for inviting us back. Until the 20 Year On.

Paul Mayer matriculated from Pretoria Boys High School in 1987. He played 1st team hockey and later on he represented his country in the under 21 South African Hockey side. Paul was left paralysed after a shooting at his home in November 2015.
We, the 1987 1st team hockey side, have formed a Paul Mayer Hockey Foundation account to raise funds for him and his family and would
like your assistance in challenging all old boys to help us raise funds for Paul.
On behalf of all the 1987 1st Team Hockey XI, we would like to challenge all the Old Boys in helping us to raise funds for Paul and his family in their new journey lying ahead of them.

My brother, Paul Mayer, was shot twice and subsequently paralysed in another senseless act of violence in South Africa – he was defending his family as four men attacked them on November 16, 2015 at night in their home. The bravery he displayed when faced with a man who had a gun to his wife’s head is the thing legends are made of.
Paul went to Pretoria Boys’ High from 1983 to 1987 and forged many friendships that will last a lifetime. He was a legendary hockey goalkeeper and went on to play at a provincial and national level. When news of what happened to Paul was posted on Facebook I received calls from so many Boys High Old Boys it was nothing short of overwhelming. And the calls came from all over the world: Germany, Australia, Singapore, Sweden, USA, Hong Kong and New Zealand to name a few. I always knew my brother was an extremely popular and loved guy but I did not realise the extent of the lives which he has touched – many old boys that were years younger than him have called to ask about him as he had inspired so many of them.
The fact that Paul is alive today is testament to an incredible fighting spirit and will to live – many doctors did not think he would make it (the bullets hit his abdomen, duodenum, gall bladder, inferior vena cava, lung and shattered his spine (T12-L1)). He is now at the Muelmed Rehabilitation Centre in the Spinal Cord Injury unit.
Paul is known as the wheelie king, he could wheelie a bike from when he was 4 years old, in high school he wheelied his mountain bike for kilometres at a time. His skill and balance are legendary – for the last decade he has been a champion trail bike rider, even featured on television and know as “The Gypsy”. His amazing balancing skills have lead him to be remarkable at moving around in his wheelchair, already showing his wheelie skills in the chair and blowing the occupational therapists
and physiotherapists away with these abilities. And he is again inspiring everyone else at the centre with his genuine character and absolute love for others.
Paul is the guy who will give you the shirt off his back and I know he has helped everyone in some way in their time of need. He makes you feel like the most important person in the world just by saying hello.

I regret to inform you of the death of Dylan Casey, Solomon House, 1996.
Some lives are lived in the present. It is hard for me to think of someone, anyone, who more embraced the present.
We were walking out from our final assembly, Mr Schroder understood occasion better than most and delivered a perfect end to our lives at PBHS.
Solomon House in the early nineties had few joys. There were some friends, there were some cheering masters, the rest seemed bleak. Elwyn van den Aardweg, Paul Ewart-Phipps, Dave van Suilichem and Andries van Wyk were great Solomon masters, amongst others, they took their charge as their own. It was a time when masters assumed the role of parent, and interestingly, disciplined accordingly. Casey, what we’ll call him from here on out, thought Elwyn the best man alive. Fully twenty years later he was still astounded by him. He was an inspired housemaster of Solomon, and even if you did not always agree with him, at the very least, you admired him.
Casey was a naughty shit. The best way to describe him. When he was not causing some he was taking pleasure in what someone else had caused. He was better at poker than what he was at cricket. He was an entertaining rugby player and a stalwart of the 5th and 6th side. But most of all he was your average citizen, middling academically, middling sportingly, and culturally not terribly inspired. Yet he squeezed every drop of experience from the school and formed in his friends real relationships.
We were walking out beneath the stone memorial, ‘To the glory of God…’, final assembly done. I mustered some courage and looked about for a mate to hug. There stood Casey, the only dried eyed boy – there may have been a hundred others – looking at me. ‘I wish I could cry.’ He said it in passing but hugged me. The emotional stuff done, he insisted that we stay in contact.
For the next couple of years a lively correspondence erupted. We wrote letters to each other, long hand, and I followed his exploits around the world. The UK, Canada and Turkey where a tryst ensued, probably his first. These things shared in letters evoke an image of a world that seems to have all but dissipated, the thought of taking the time to write to someone in longhand, such a treasure now.
You see something had happened in the smithy of our souls. In Solomon House, in the belly of PBHS, we had bonded. That bond bound us, and many others, together for what remained of our lives.
When Casey returned from abroad he set himself to work on a Bcom degree at what was then RAU. A university degree was more a union ticket to life than anything else. He could not see himself learning from anything other than the real experience of life. Other than an interest in running, he spent little time in the wings of RAU, and rather set to work on ideas that may send him into the stratosphere.
Casey did not single mindedly pursue wealth. It was perfection of almost every sort. He would refine ideas to the point where they would dissipate. One week it would be DVDs delivered by bike, the next it would be single cigarette vending machines – he actually had twenty placed at a point, and then as so often happens in this sort of situation, legislation changed.
Then there was the property scheme, strings of it have survived him, the list goes on and on. The one that stuck was online retail. Dylan was really only ever formally employed for a couple of years after school. Reebok needed an online strategy and he took a proposal to the boss and did a deal. The rest, as it were, was history.
In its wake would follow a series of online deals that varied in success. by 2008 he had formed a company, Etailer, and sold anything from air rifles to books, from running shoes to drill bits, you name it at one point or another he sold it. Gradually, however, he refined the model and arrived at something he thought could work. As always Casey was all in.
In the spring of 2003 he met Anel, they got married in 2012, and he was set for life. There was no looking back. She embodied everything that he looked for in a partner. She was forgiving and understanding. The fact that she is a trained educational psychologist and specialised in young children seemed to help.
Life was one big adventure, and the two of them moved to Cape Town eventually setting up to live in Camps Bay. It is hard to think of a more perfect setting for them. They took to an outdoor life and when Casey was not running he was swimming. Many fell victim to his, ‘let’s climb Lion’s Head’, or better, meet you at the beach for a run. Cycling followed trail running, the list was endless…
It was swimming in the tidal pool that he liked most. Many would become a victim of ‘it’s not that cold.’
Life had come to resemble what he’d always wanted. It was diverse and interesting, there were challenges, but it was sweet. Most of all, though, he shared it with a woman he loved completely.
On the morning of Thursday the 5th of November 2015 Casey met a friend for a run. He arrived home after and said that he was hot, he was going for a swim. It was his last.
A week later there was a memorial for him, held just down the road, at the Twelve Apostles. Over a hundred people turned up and many spoke. What was astounding was how Dylan has forged friendships and lasting relationships in every conceivable way. He was a builder, not just of things, but of people, and took a real personal interest in everything and everyone. He had no time for the negative, it was always progress, it was always the next thing.
Dylan Casey has left a hole in the lives of so many. He is survived by Anel, his wife, and Achilles, his cat. We know that he loved Anel more.
