Dear Old Boy
This week’s newsletter focuses on the sporting achievements of Johann and Stephan Myburgh.
The Myburgh brothers both attended Pretoria Boys High School and have each established themselves as talented cricketers.

Johannes Gerhardus Myburgh is a South African cricketer who plays domestic cricket in England for Somerset County Cricket Club. A right-handed batsman and occasional off-break bowler, Myburgh is also a talented fielder and, is the current holder of the record for the youngest scorer (age 17) of a double-century in South African domestic cricket, breaking the 1997 record of Graeme Pollock.
Johann Myburgh matriculated at Pretoria Boys High School in 1998. By then he had already made his first class debut in 1997 and continued to play for Northerns and the Titans until 2007 before emigrating to New Zealand.

Johann Myburgh – a brilliant opening batsman who scored 1079 runs at an average of 63,5 with six centuries to his credit. Johann is devastating against short-pitched bowling and has an incredible concentration span which allows
him to destroy attacks with brutal hits, or delicately placed shots. He is a brilliant runner between wickets and at cover point he cuts off a huge number of runs with his very lively fielding. He loves to motivate his teammates and has recently also turned out to be a more than useful limited-overs bowler. The team will once again rely heavily on him. Johann is in the U19 SA squad for the U19 World Cup and received Honours for his achievements for the first XI (Re-awarded in 1998). He is also a Northerns B (Seniors) regular and plays for the Northerns U18 Nuffield team.

The highlight whilst playing for Northerns was Johann’s highest score in first class cricket (203) for Northerns ‘B’ against Easterns at Pretoria in 1997-8, which made him the youngest person in South Africa to accomplish this achievement in first class history.
Johann represented South Africa U/19 for three years and in 1999 he was Man of the Series against Pakistan in the ODI.
During the 2005/6 season Johann was the leading run scorer for the Titans in the Standard Bank Cup. He scored a 70 ball hundred vs Eastern Province in the inaugural Discovery knockout (20/20) competition and played in two List A Finals for the Titans.
In 2007, Johann scored 78 when he played for the Titans against South Africa in a pre-World Cup match. From 2007 to 2010 he played first class cricket in New Zealand for Canterbury Wizards, his highest List A score is 112 for Canterbury versus Auckland at Christchurch in 2009-10.
Johann’s career highlights thus far include:
- Winner of the first class competition during the 2007/08 season.
- Played in 20/20 final 2008/2009
- Named Canterbury Wizard Batsman of the Season during 2007/08 and 2008/09 season.
- Scored 2 centuries in one first class match in 2009/10 season – vs Central Districts (199 and 101*)
- Player/coach at The Hague Cricket Club that won the double 20/20 and 50 over competition in 2008
Since 2010 Johann has played for three different counties in the UK, namely Hampshire in 2011 (leading run scorer for Hampshire during the Caribbean T20 competition in 2011), Durham in 2012 and, in 2014 he joined Somerset on a one year contract and has subsequently signed a two year extension. In 2014 he played in thirteen first class matches for Somerset scoring 530 runs, with a best of 91 on his debut against Yorkshire at Taunton in the season’s opener.

Stephanus Johannes Myburgh is a South African international cricketer currently playing for the Netherlands National Cricket Team. He is a left-handed batsman and right-arm off break bowler.
During his school years, Stephan Myburgh played cricket for Northerns at all levels from U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19 and played for Pretoria Boys High School 1st XI from Form 2 until he matriculated in 2002.
He started his career in South Africa when he made his first class and list-A debut for Northerns in 2006 and also represented Natal Inlands in 2011. He made his international debut for Holland in September 12, 2011.
Stephen Myburgh – Stephen has shown total commitment to cricket. As captain, he always worked his team to excel and drove them to achieve success. He showed this year that he was a player of true quality in all areas of the game. (Full Colours 2001, re-awarded in 2002)

In 2003, Stephan went to the Northerns Cricket Academy where he was Batsman of the Year and played two unofficial matches for the Titans. He also represented South Africa at the Samsung Super Skills in the UK where he won the infield dead eye competition.
On 21 March 2014 against Ireland, Stephan equalled the record of the second fastest fifty in Twenty20 International with Paul Stirling of Ireland. He made three half centuries in six games including one against South Africa. At the end of the World Cup Stephan was selected in the World Team.
We wish both Johann and Stephan all of the very best and much success with their respective cricket careers and remain very proud of their achievements thus far.

Water Polo
Jacques Erasmus has been appointed to the position of Director of Water Polo. In this role, Jacques will perform an ongoing analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of water polo at the school with a view to implementing structures to address any
challenges.
Hockey
PBHS Old Boy and International player, Craig Fulton, has been appointed to oversee hockey through Nedstar at the school. Nedstar will take on this role in the capacity of professional consultants to the hockey fraternity.
CAPE TOWN BRANCH 2015 DINNER
The Cape Town Branch of the Pretoria Boys High Old Boys Association will hold its Annual Function on Tuesday 21 April 2015 at Rondebosch Golf Club.
This year a Stag Dinner has been organised at a cost of R160.00, payable before by EFT. The Pretoria Boys High School Headmaster Mr. Tony Reeler will travel from Pretoria to attend the dinner.
All Old Boys in the Western Cape are welcomed and we expect the usual healthy turnout so we ask that you confirm your attendance and complete the bank transfer as soon as possible.

DESMOND ABERNETHY HALL UPDATE
Building Report: Week ending 6 February
The fallen Oak tree in the Hendry Quad has been pulled upright and soil inserted behind the retaining wall. The end walls for terracing in Hendry Quad are under construction. Foundations for the terraces making up the Wall of Remembrance in the Memorial Quad have been cast and the floor of the new orchestra rehearsal room (above the stage) is now complete.
The plastering of the gallery back wall is now complete and construction of the east and west ground floor hall entrances is under way. The tiles in the area under the gallery are being lifted and the upper level of the east wing is being prepared for the casting of the slab that will constitute part of the walkway as well as tiered seating and access stairs.
Building Report: Week ending 13 February
The ground level in the Hendry Quad is being lowered by approximately one metre (the soil is being used as back fill in the Memorial Quad). The drainage system in the Memorial Quad is being installed. The end walls of the memorial wall area, the shuttering for the casting of the reinforced concrete in the upper level in the new east wing and construction of the ground floor entrances from the two quads is also now complete.
Bricking up and plastering of the windows and doorway on the western side of the hall has been completed plus installation of the steel framework that will support the aisles and tiered seating in the main gallery is now underway. This will also form the corridor under the gallery seating that links the east and west wings of the main building.
8TH ANNUAL EASTERN CAPE DINNER
The Eastern Cape Region held its 8th Annual Dinner on 14 November 2014 at the Kelway Hotel on the Port Elizabeth Beachfront. Besides Mr Reeler, other guests included Ian Pringle, Executive manger of the Old Grey Union, and Canon Roy Snyman, Old Boy of 1947, who celebrated his 80th Birthday on 13 October 2014. Other friends from Pretoria who regularly attend were Geoff Meyer, James Lourens, Glen Corlett, Mike Carnie and Mike von Bardeleben.

Of course we are always delighted to welcome Eastern Cape Old Boys who travelled some distances to join us, Glenn McCreath came from Bathurst. Craig Williams and John Hollely came from Plettenberg Bay and Peter Hollely from Knysna. To the best of our knowledge we are the only branch of the Association that includes partners at the main function of the year.
As always, attendees enjoyed Mr Reelers’s address giving us news of the School, proposed developments and confirming that our School was performing well, academically, culturally and on the sports fields. Mr Reeler was also the victor in the North vs South Golf Challenge.
The evening was a most enjoyable occasion culminating in a good few “night caps” in the Kelway’s congenial pub. Regrettably and understandably our Rhodes University Old Boys were unable to join us this year due to examination commitments.

EDDIE’S NOTE
It had been raining the previous night and the day was wet and overcast. I sat on the solitary step of Mr van Aswegen’s study amusing myself by reading some of the rather feeble excuse notes which lay littered around his desk, when I noticed a khaki umbrella standing in the far corner of the study.
On it was pinned a note written in an untidy scrawl which read:
“Assie ou bielie,
How goes it with you. Sal jy semblief my ou brella vandag oppas,
en sal jy semblief sien dat die outjies hom in breaks nie opmesj nie.
Byvoorbaat dank,
