The PBHS Summer Sports Day was the first Old Boys event of the year, taking place on the first Saturday of the school term, 18th January 2025.
Our sincere thanks to all Old Boys for their enthusiastic participation in all sports and cultural events, and to their families for joining us to celebrate the start of a new year and the huge family that is Pretoria Boys High School.

OLD BOYS EXPRESSION OF INTEREST PROCESS
GRADE 8 – 2026 – SONS AND GRANDSONS
Dear Old Boys
The Grade 8 2026 admission process in Gauteng is run entirely by the Department of Education. Each year the GDE online process commences in approximately June / July. Parents will be required to apply directly through the Department of Education’s online portal www.gdeadmissions.gov.za This process is compulsory for everyone.
The Department of Education requires us to submit a list of names of Old Boys’ sons / grandsons to them by end-March each year. They then allocate us reserved spaces for these specific pupils.
We have compiled an Expression of Interest form for Old Boys to complete. This form will be submitted to the Department of Education for allocation.
If you follow this Old Boy Expression of Interest process your son/grandson will be placed at Pretoria Boys High for Grade 8.
In the event that you have an Old Boy tie to the school and will be applying for Grade 8 2026 we ask parents please complete the link below.
Please note that only sons and grandsons will be considered for placement under the Old Boy process.

The cut-off date for this Old Boy Expression of Interest process is 20 March 2025.
Please note that Pretoria Boys High has to submit the Old Boy list to the Department of Education by mid-March each year. Once the submission has taken place we are not able to reserve additional spaces at a later stage.
STEP BY STEP PROCESS WHEN APPLYING THROUGH THE GDE ONLINE SYSTEM:
GDE placement criteria:
List 1 – Living in feeder zone
List 2 – Siblings
List 3 – Working in feeder zone
List 4 – Living within 30km
List 5 – Living outside 30km
- On the day the GDE online system opens parents will need to visit www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to apply.
- When applying you will be required to select one of the above placement criteria that applies to your application.
- Parents are required to register as a parent and fill in your details,
- You will then register your son and fill in his details
- You then upload your attaching documents to the GDE online system. Save each document separately to your PC for ease of reference.
Documents you will be required to upload:
o Latest school report
o Unabridged birth certificate
o Copy of Mother / Father ID
o Proof of residence (ONLY water & lights account or lease agreement are accepted)
o Proof of employment (if applying based on working in feeder zone)
- Once your documents have been uploaded you can submit your application on the GDE online system.
- There is no need to bring any documents to the school. We will access your documents from the GDE online system.
- Please monitor your sms’s on your phone as that is how the GDE communicates with parents if something additional is required and for acceptances.
- Once placements take place you will receive either an sms that states that your son has been “Placed” and nothing further is required OR an sms that states that your son has received an offer of acceptance which you must accept on the GDE online system. You then log on to the system where you applied and click “Accept” next to Pretoria Boys High School’s name.
- Once you accept the offer of acceptance Pretoria Boys High School we will make contact with you via email regarding our enrolment process.
PLEASE NOTE:
The Department of Education no longer allows us to reserve space for siblings. Siblings will be required to apply directly through the Department of Education as “Sibling” is an approved criteria through the GDE online system under List 2.
In terms of the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, it is compulsory to pay school fees at Pretoria Boys High School for boys as we are a quintile 5 fee paying school. A prerequisite of acceptance will be your commitment to paying the school/boarding fees by signing an enrolment contract as well as a debit order.
Boarding applications are not done through the GDE online portal. Parents have to visit www.boyshigh.com and apply under the admissions tab through the school. Boarding spaces are not guaranteed as placement is done on a shortlisting basis similar to that of a job interview.

PRETORIA BOYS HIGH SCHOOL – OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION OUTPOST

Outpost Get-together held at Whitfords Brewing Company in Hillarys on 28 November 2024

Good food, cold beverages and even better conversations were shared at our final event of 2024. On 28 November, 23 members of the WA Outpost met at the Whitfords Brewing Company in Hillarys to share memories and stories of old.
Skipper Maish Dolgoy (Solomon 1976) officially welcomed the 12 new members, and it is refreshing to see how the Outpost has continued to grow over the course of 2024. It is also incredible to note that we had Old Boys from 5 different decades (1960 – 2010) represented at the get-together. Such a wealth of experience in one room was truly magnificent and a rare achievement for most of us. The Outpost has become integral in rekindling old friendships and forging new ones in WA.
Tony “Tatty” Taverner (Solomon 1963), the most senior Old Boy in attendance, was then invited to propose the formal “Toast to the School”.
In his “Toast to the Outpost”, Alex Ralston (Solomon 2010), the youngest Old Boy in attendance, reminded us that we actually have two things in common … not only did we all attend the “School on the Hill”, but we all made our way to Perth at some point in time; and that is no easy feat … in anyone’s life.
Alex also spoke about how the Outpost has played such a big part in helping him to integrate into his new surroundings and how much he has enjoyed the opportunity to share and connect with like-minded lads throughout the year.
Robert Boggs (School 1964) then concluded formalities with the “Toast to Absent Friends”, remembering those WA Old Boys who couldn’t join us at this gathering.
This was followed by a rickety performance of “40 Years On”, after which a jolly good time was had by all, while Andrew Stegmann (Arcadia 2007) got a cute waitress to do the “Group Photo Shoot” above … earning him an official events responsibility.
As 2025 roles in, we look forward to many more opportunities to connect and to reminisce about our shared experiences. We will also continue in our quest to perfect a raucous rendition of “40 Years On” (with advance apologies to any and all our fellow patrons).

PBHS Old Boys’ Get-Together in Perth, Western Australia
FENCING : OLD BOY JASON VISSER
In December 2024, Jason Visser (2022, Armstrong) participated in the 2024 Inter-Varsity League Championship, open to university students from all provinces.
Jason secured a silver medal in Senior Foil and a bronze medal in Senior Epee.
The previous month, in November, Jason earned Gauteng Colours in four categories: U20 Epee, U20 Foil, Senior Epee, and Senior Foil, marking his ninth consecutive year receiving this award. He also achieved the top ranking in U20 Epee and Foil, as well as Senior Foil. Additionally, he competed in the final Tuks Fencing Club Challenge, where he was ranked the top U20 athlete and placed third overall in the senior category for the club.
In October, Jason received Honorary Sports Colours from the University of Pretoria for the second year in a row. This recognition celebrated his outstanding achievements at the 2024 Junior African Championship, where he earned two team medals and served as team captain.
Jason continues to coach fencing at Pretoria Boys High School, entering his third year as a coach in 2025.
Congratulations Jason, we are so proud of you for your achievements in fencing and for giving back by coaching the boys at the school on the hill, your alma mater.

KAYEMBE ILUNGA (CLASS OF 2004, ARMSTRONG)
(After noticing a post on LinkedIn that one of our Old Boys, Kayembe Ilunga, had attained a Masters in Management with a specialisation in Digital Business from Wits Business School, we reached out to him and asked him to share his career path from his time at PBHS to date). In his words:
“Reflecting on my journey from Pretoria Boys High School, I am reminded of the profound impact the institution had on shaping my aspirations and achievements. The school’s emphasis on excellence, holistic development, and caring for those around you instilled in me a drive to pursue diverse opportunities, make meaningful contributions across various sectors, and positively contribute to my community, whether in South Africa or Namibia.
After completing my education at Pretoria Boys High, I ventured into the corporate world, gaining experience in FMCG, financial services, and consulting. My career path took me across the continent and exposed me to diverse cultures and ways of life. A big part of who I am today is because I actively took what I thought were the best parts of these cultures and added them to my way of life.
I started my career off at South African Breweries in Pretoria, and like most of my peers, this was probably the most fun part of my career, as it was the perfect place for a social butterfly like me to land. I then ventured into the financial services with Trustco Group International in Namibia, where I was part of a team that created micro insurance propositions for retail customers and MNO subscribers. My love for FinTech grew even more during my time at Old Mutual due to the exposure that I got in various roles such as Head of Mobile Customer Solutions, Head of Digital Operations and lastly Head of Digital & Data Analytics for the SADC region. Instead of being in Johannesburg or Cape Town and barking orders into my region, I decided to be based in Namibia (one of the countries in my portfolio) where I met my amazing wife.
In 2021 I took a career break and became a full-time student to do the coursework of the Masters in Management with a specialisation in Digital Business from WITS Business School. I was unsure of where I wanted to restart my career once the coursework was done so I ventured into consulting to 1) expand my knowledge base of emerging technology and how it’s applied in different industries, and 2) to get a better idea of where I wanted to spend the next few years of my career.
I landed up at Wunderman Thompson (WT), now VML, as Consulting Director, where my focus was on creating memorable digital, physical, and “phygical” experiences for customers, employees and leaders with material benefits to the organisation. A partner at PwC then reached out and asked me to help them replicate the success that I had had at WT. I accepted the challenge and took up the role of Associate Director in Experience Consulting at PwC South Africa, where I focused on digital transformation and experience strategies for entities like Vodacom, SMU, and Sanlam.
Although I love my corporate career, the values instilled during my time at Pretoria Boys High were instrumental in my other endeavours. The school’s commitment to its community inspired me to take on challenges and drive initiatives that create a positive societal impact. This inspiration led to philanthropic efforts, including financially contributing to the building of elementary schools in Namibia to enhance educational access, founding Ilunga Wealth Management, a property investment company dedicated to providing affordable housing solutions for starting families in South Africa, and actively mentoring the next generation of experience creators.
In recent developments, I have been exploring the breakthroughs and wonders of AI to create memorable experiences for customers and firms. Additionally, I have been involved in delivering TEDx talks on leveraging experience design principles to create compelling customer, employee, and leadership propositions. The foundation laid at Pretoria Boys High continues to influence my professional journey, driving me to innovate and contribute meaningfully to my society”.

THE TRILOGY OCEAN CHALLENGE
Over the weekend of 14-16 February 2025 Old Boys Peet Crowther (2007, Matheson) and Deputy Headmaster Chris Oldnall (2005, Matheson) completed a 14 hour practice swim ahead of the second official swim in the Trilogy Ocean Challenge where they will traverse 53km of the Atlantic Ocean from Robben Island to Dassen Island.
The practice round saw them swim around 30km in the icy waters of Langebaan and Yzerfontein to test their fitness, endurance and ability to navigate the challenging ocean conditions.
For Chris and Peet, taking on the Trilogy Ocean Challenge isn’t just about testing endurance – it’s about creating opportunities for talented children without resources. The funds raised for the South African Hall of Fame’s Legacy Project will provide bursaries for 28 boys to attend Pretoria Boys High School.

Peet Crowther has advised that their window of opportunity for the second, 53km, swim starts on the 15th March 2025. “Historic data shows favourable conditions roundabout this time. Getting 24 hours of favourable swim conditions around the Cape is quite rare, therefore we need to find the best scenario that will give us the best odds of completing the swim”, said Peet.

PBHS SWIMMING
The School’s swim team travelled to KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend 8-9 February 2025 to compete in the prestigious Westville Gala and, for the first time, participate in the renowned Midmar Mile!
The event was an exciting challenge for our swimmers, who showcased their dedication and skill in both competitions.
Notably, three of the PBHS teams finished in the top 10 in the Midmar company teams’ event.
Congratulations to all our swimmers for their outstanding performances and for making the school and its Old Boys proud!

We are in the process of securing advertisers for our annual Pretorian magazine.
Please show your support for the school and our boys by taking up this exclusive opportunity. The money raised through advertising is used to offset production costs which are estimated at R375 000 this year.
The Pretorian magazine has been published for over 100 years and represents one of the longest continuous records of educational, sporting and cultural achievements amongst schools in the province.
The magazine fulfils the function of the school yearbook, but is also distributed to Old Boys, our advertisers, educational institutions such as primary schools, high schools and tertiary institutions. The print-run is 2000 copies annually with a readership of approximately 12 000.
It is also available digitally on the Pretoria Boys High website and the link will be published on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn once published, reaching a further combined following of 43 000.
The magazine is A4 (297 x 210mm) in size and this year’s issue will run in excess of 320 pages of full colour printing. The Pretorian is printed on heavy coated paper with a full colour UV varnished cover and section binding to a square spine.
The following options are available for prospective advertisers (our booking rates have remained the same as last year).

UPDATE ON THE DEVELOPING TOMORROW’S LEADERS TODAY CAMPAIGN
Former Headmaster Bill Schroder has over the past three years (and is continuing to do so) been leading a fundraising campaign called Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today. The campaign is part of the school’s Pretorian Trust Bursary Fund, which raises funds for investment towards providing bursaries to talented boys who, without a bursary, would not otherwise be able to attend the beautiful school on the hill due to financial constraints.
In November 2024, Mr Schroder provided an update on the fundraising efforts and its investment, which is copied hereunder to update Old Boys who have donated or continuously donate via a debit order.

The breakdown for donations received by the “Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders, Today” campaign between January and November 2024 is as follows:

I mention this breakdown advisedly as I wish to encourage donors to make use of the monthly debit order option which no matter how small, after five years results in a significant donation. A debit order is available for downloading on the website www.pretorian.co.za via the “Donate Now button”. Donations via various forms of payment may also be made via this link.
In addition to the above, the campaign has forwarded, during this period, donors to the Talent Bursary initiative run by the School, to the value of 4,200,000 over a five year period.
The above has resulted in our being able to increase the investment with Investec to R14,766 million with a further R2.455 million in debit orders, on-going pledges and money in the Pretorian Trust account.
The investment amount of R14,766 million represents three year’s of fundraising efforts but there is much which still needs to be done. We need to give an increasing number of deserving boys the level of education that you, as Old Boys, enjoyed but can only do so with your help.
While not falling directly under this campaign, the Talent Bursary Scheme run by the School currently has 102 boys on bursaries to the value of R10.6 million.

IN MEMORIAM
ROBIN THEODORE HULSE (1947, RISSIK HOUSE)
5th March 1930 – 26th December 2024
Robin Theodore Hulse was a man of integrity, a caring man who was selfless and generous to all.
He was a member of the class of ’47, Rissik House.
PBHS remained dear to him for the duration of his life.
He was one of the regulars at Old Boys Meetings and attended his last “Thundergun” Old Boys Meeting just a few weeks before his passing. He was particularly keen to attend this meeting as Mr Greg Hasenkamp, the new Headmaster of PBHS would be present and he wanted to hear first-hand his vision for taking the school forward.
Dad was not one of the superstars of ’47 but continued to rise to the top in the business world with Barclays Bank where he started as an office clerk and moved through up the ranks to eventually retire as a Vice President of the FNB group.
Life to Dad was made up of many great adventures. His biggest one was his lifelong marriage to Pat which produced two offspring Gavin and Sandra.
Robin grew up in the small farming community of Val where his interest and passion for nature and gardening probably arose .His running career was to prove to be his next biggest adventure. He only started this adventure in his late forties and packed into it ten successive Comrades to earn his coveted green number of 1110. He completed a couple of Two Oceans ultra marathons together with numerous other road running events where he was a regular in the top five or so positions in his age group. This was a particularly happy period of his life.
As age crept up on him his passion for exercise moved into hiking in the natural areas to the South of Johannesburg and across to the Magaliesberg. Long distance cycling also formed part of his exercise mix.
Throughout his life was the steadying influence of Pat who gave him the time to have his adventures to which Dad was eternally grateful. One can truly say that Pat kept him grounded in his adventures. Throughout his life he was an avid patron of the Anglican church and in particular St Thomas’s where he has been a regular attendee of the 6:30 AM service since the mid-1960s to a few weeks ago.
Dad placed Mom, Sandra and myself ahead of himself all the time. Dad, thank you for what you have done for the family, you have left a wonderful legacy, and we will cherish your memory in our hearts.
Robin can easily be described in four words. He was a man of integrity, caring, selflessness and generosity – from his son, Gavin Hulse (1976, Rissik).
